CyberpunkCoupleSlang!

Here's why I think that 'Input/Output' as slang for Boyfriend/Girlfriend is actually super romantic.

If you look past the sexual innuendo that first jumps at you when you first read the title, I'm sure that you already know what I'm about to say, but just in case, I'll say it anyway.

Being in a relationship is much more than just sex, despite what the heteronormative worldview forced upon us by our own, very real, cyberpunk dystopia might want you to think.

Your partner should be someone you can trust with your life. Someone who you can trust to help you with your problems and many such things. You of course, will do the same for them, because you love them. That's just how it works. Don't ask me why; love isn't something that can be easily explained.

Let's say that you want to buy a new outfit. You might want to ask your partner for advice on it, they know you quite intimately and so should be able to tell you if it fits well and matches your eyes. In this case, your asking them for their *input*. Are you getting what I'm putting down?

Scenario two, you've just come home from a long day at work. It's the first day of the month, and the first working day after payday. A flood of new orders have just come in and your boss is giving you flak for not completing them fast enough. You rant and shout about how much of a giant prick he is, all why your partner calmly listens - maybe sipping some tea. In this case they are your *output* (for your emotions).

I believe that the terms Input and Output should be able to be used interchangeably, and at will, but that would be quite confusing I imagine. Or maybe not. I don't know, lack of experience I guess. In any case, the sexual element of the term seems to shine through more than the romance to most people, so despite what I want, it will continue to represent Boyfriend/Girlfriend - or in non-heteronormative relationships, Top/Bottom - for the majority.
